District Governor's Message:

March 2017 -

Comments from Your District Governor

In our Lions District 22-B, March came in like a Lion and we need to have it leave like a Lion.

We started the month being on the plus side of membership growth in every month this Lions year. Can we end the month the same way? I believe we can. So far this Lions year 28 clubs have added members and we can all be motivated by our Crisfield Lioness Lions who have led the way by adding a total of 16 new Lions to their club as well as our Chesapeake City Lions who added a total of 8 new Lions to their club. We need to celebrate those small clubs also who added members like Willards who grew over 20% (9 to 11) in total, and like Rock Hall who added over 35% (11 to 15). We have added 109 Lions to the District this year. Wow!  But we have still lost way too many (69) for a net growth of +40. Keep working on shutting that back door!

To help support all our efforts, we are working with LCI to create some Digital Advertising to the public in our communities that shows them Hunger, Youth, Vision Impaired, and Environment with the question “Want to Help? Join Us! In addition, I am testing some poster advertising with my own club that was created with simple Microsoft Word software that any club can copy. More to come on the results. LCI is suggesting that we Lions go on a Safari hunt…. hunting for those Lions that left us for whatever reason these past couple of years. Hunt them and tell them what successes we are having in serving our communities and growing in every way.  Seems like a good idea to me. Maybe they just couldn’t drive at night and we can arrange for transportation to and from meetings; maybe their health has improved; maybe their family issues have improved; and maybe their attitude has improved.  Doesn’t matter why they left, it just matters that they understand that we miss them and their contributions.

Lions from 22-B and 22-D are getting together for a Membership Summit on March 25 at Carletto’s Pizza – 220 N. Church Street in Sudlersville, MD from 10 AM to 2:00 PM. Come learn what others are doing and/or share what you are doing to increase our Lions Footprint. This promises to be a fun and great learning/sharing experience.

If you missed our 22-B Social last month, you missed a wonderful event, but next up will be an even better one. Our Multi District 22 Convention being held in Gettysburg, PA from Monday, May 15 through Thursday May 18. Some really great entertainment is planned along with good learning experiences and great social mingling with other Lions just like you. Now is the time to sign up. I hope you will and I hope to see you there.

Remember “If it is to be … It is up to Me”. Reach-Out!

DG Ben Cassell

Important Club Tax Reminder:

Please remember that ALL Lions Clubs, Districts and Multiple Districts that have annual gross receipts less than $50,000 and do not have to file Form 990 or 990-EZ, must file the e-Postcard (also known as 990-N). Please note that this is an IRS requirement. Please refer to the following chart regarding annual filing requirements:

Beginning in 2010 Tax Year (and each year thereafter)
Form to File
Gross receipts normally less than $50,000
990-N
Gross receipts greater than $50,000 and less than
$200,000, and Total Assets less than $500,000
990-EZ or 990
Gross receipts greater than $200,000
or Total assets greater than $500,000
990

The e-Postcard is due by the 15th day of the fifth month after the close of your tax year. Lions Clubs operate on a fiscal year, July 1 – June 30, and the e-Postcard will be due by November 15th each year. Please note that an organization cannot request an extension for filing the Form 990-N.

If you do not file, you risk losing your tax-exempt status. Any Lions Club that fails to meet its annual reporting requirement for three consecutive years automatically loses its tax exempt status under the new law. A club may get reinstated if they complete an application for recognition of exemption even if they originally fell under a group exemption.  Every Club and/or District must have an employer identification number (EIN), even if it will not have employees. The EIN is a unique number that identifies the organization to the Internal Revenue Service. To apply for an EIN, you should obtain a Form SS-4 and its Instructions from the IRS. You may also apply for an EIN online, by telephone (1-800-829-4933), or by fax (fax number at the location accepting applications from your state). It is important that the Clubs and Districts are using the correct EIN for their annual filing.

For frequently asked questions about tax issues and regulations affecting Lions clubs and leadership, go to the Lions Tax FAQ. Go to www.irs.gov/eo for complete details and while you're there sign up for Exempt Organization's free email newsletter, EO Update, to receive up-to-date information posted on the charity pages of irs.gov.
