Although you, as one of 15 in D37I  Zone Chairs, are a critical link between the District officers and the individual clubs, Zone Chairs have historically been inactive. Why? I believe it is partly because Zone Chairs have historically not received the training and guidance needed to give you the confidence you need to do your job. We’ve all been to BORING zone meetings and you quite probably (and rightfully so) would rather not hold a zone meeting than hold a boring one.

So, what can we do to bring some kick and function to the Zone Chair position and zone meetings?
  1. District Officers can VOLUNTEER to train Zone Chairs rather than waiting for the odd eager Zone Chair to try to find some training.
  2. District Officers can provide Zone Chairs a list of District, MD, and LCI goals with explanations and resources the Zone Chair can access to pass along to clubs.
  3. District Officers can provide information to give Zone Chairs some specific, relevant, and timely reasons for holding zone meetings
  4. District Officers can make information available to Zone Chairs that needs to get into the hands of the Club Officers.
What are a couple goals we could start with?

I am the District Chair for the Global Leadership Team, an initiative designed to ( in a nutshell) provide useful information to our membership in an effort to identify and educate potential leaders. Two immediate goals the D37I Global Leadership Team identified are:
  1. Ensure that all club secretaries know how to, and do, complete monthly WMMR, Club Activities, and annual PU101 forms for LCI by December 31, 2011.
  2. Train Club Membership Chairs in Orientation and Refresher Orientation by March 1, 2012 so they can provide this information to their clubs.
What do I want you as a Zone Chair to do?
  1. Become at least peripherally aware of the contents of the learning resources listed below for Zone Chairs and for Club Officers.
  2. Become familiar with the information provided in the Zone Chair Manual and resources listed for Club Officers identified in the Club Officer under number 1, 5, 8, and 10.
  3. Make copies of the directions to above identified 4 topics.
  4. Set a zone meeting for early in the fall at which you can
            a.  discuss the above two goals,
            b.  give a brief overview of what club officers will find at each of the 4 links, and
            c.  set a completion date coinciding with your second zone meeting.

Then what?
  1. You should contact any clubs that did not attend the first zone meeting and familiarize them with the above two goals.
  2. After a month or so, contact each club and ask how they are doing with their assignments. This will remind club officers to activate themselves and reinforce the idea that we are serious about achieving these goals.
  3. Begin familiarizing yourself with information provided under some of the other links so you have something new to challenge club officers with next meeting.
  4. Call any Cabinet officers you think might be able to help you by way of information, resources, or as a guest speaker at your second zone meeting.
